Inquiry Learning and the PYP at Kew Primary School

Kew Primary School is in the beginning phase of becoming an International Baccalaureate School through its candidacy in their Primary Years Program. This program strongly aligns with Kew Primary’s focus on the education of the whole child and their place in the 21st century.

The PYP program “aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with differences, can also be right.”

Ref: IB Mission Statement – Making the PYP Happen

The PYP program is inquiry based where teachers guide students to construct new and deeper meaning from their current level of understanding. Curiosity is valued and ideas are respected. Students are encouraged to explore, question, hypothesise, research, gather data, test theories and problem solve around a central idea or understanding.

The PYP program is built around six interdisciplinary themes, the IB learner profile, concepts, skills, attitudes and actions.

Interdisciplinary Themes

Who we are
Where we are in place and time
How we express ourselves
How the world works
